Amazing Photo: Jellyfish Protecting a Young Fish

Jellyfish offers protection to a young fish: (OMG!) Don’t worry, that fish isn’t being eaten by the jellyfish, he’s actually being protected.

This OMG photo was taken by National Geographic photographers in the waters off Moalboal, Phillipines. They attracted this duo by submerging a scaffolding of blinking LED lights deep into the water to see what curious creatures would swim up from the depths to take a look. (Don’t try that with an iPhone!)

Photo by @daviddoubilet A jellyfish provides cover to a juvenile fish in a night sea filled with predators near Moalboal, Philippines. Our team submerged a scaffolding of blinking LED lights that attracted creatures from the 3000 foot depths below us. This jellyfish and its hitchhiker appeared in our stage light for a few moments before disappearing back into the depths. Diving in a night sea is like floating in an alien universe of creatures and behavior that are rarely if ever seen by day. Not sure how long the two stayed together, but the fish was clearly seeking protection from all the predators that swim around at night in those dark waters. The jellyfish? I’d like to think he was just happy to have a friend.
